asbestos we can

I was thinking today as I stood crowded around a flagpole with high school students at an ungodly hour in the cold morning air. I don't like our traditions sometimes -stand up-  -sit down- -fold your hands- -say these meaningless words- -sing things you don't understand- -use strange vocabulary-  although many of these things we do can be the very poison that makes our spiritual lives as muted as a grayscale rainbow. Is it all we have? I mean are we such a people that we don't know how to deeply communicate and our hearts are in such need of being planted in healthy soil that these empty traditions are all we know to give? It's a song, that doesn't truly capture our hearts, but maybe we feel that these words somehow have some correlation with this world that we haven't seen and so we sing in meager attempt.  A meager attempt by a desperate humanity.
